A new challenge at 59

Carmen was no stranger to endurance events. With a background in marathon running, she already understood what it meant to train consistently, challenge herself and keep going when things became difficult. But HYROX was something different. At 59, Carmen decided to step outside the familiar world of distance running and take on a sport that would test her strength, endurance and ability to perform under fatigue. She needed to learn how to combine that running ability with eight demanding workout stations.

Being a runner was only part of the equation

HYROX brings together different physical demands. An athlete might be comfortable covering long distances, but running between sled pushes, carries, lunges and wall balls presents a completely different challenge. For Carmen, the goal was to build on the endurance she already had while developing the other qualities needed to become a more complete HYROX athlete. That meant approaching her preparation with greater structure and learning how to manage the demands of the race as a whole.

Her first HYROX was just the beginning

Carmen took on her first HYROX and crossed the finish line. But she wasn't finished challenging herself. She returned to training with more experience, a clearer understanding of the event and another opportunity to see what she could achieve. And when she raced again, she improved her time by six minutes. A brilliant achievement for an athlete who was already experienced in endurance sport but had taken on an entirely new discipline.

There's always room to grow

What makes Carmen's story special isn't just her age or her personal best. It's her willingness to keep learning. She didn't allow her existing experience to limit what she could try next, and she didn't treat completing her first HYROX as the end of the journey. She came back and improved. At 59, Carmen wasn't slowing down. She was discovering a whole new way to challenge herself. And that's exactly what we love to see at Wilder Fitness.
